When lonely Veronica Fisher (Garland) places an advertisement in the paper inviting correspondence with an intelligent young man, a romance blossoms between Fisher and Andrew Delby Larkin (Van Johnson), even though the two never meet. Meanwhile, Fisher takes a job at a local music store--working with Larkin. The two actively dislike each other at work, unaware that they are ardently writing to each other at night.
